Louisiana Tech’s department of history and Phi Alpha Theta history honor society have teamed up to celebrate Women’s History Month with a variety of lectures, films and a research paper competition.
Dr. Laurie S. Stoff, an assistant professor of history, said the purpose of the events is to highlight women’s accomplishments throughout history.
Students enrolled in History 475: Women in History created the first event, an exhibition titled “Women Who Made History,” this past winter quarter at Tech. The exhibit will be displayed through March 31 in the main foyer of George T. Madison Hall.
Other events scheduled include the following:

• “We Get It – No One Wants Us: Black Women and the Media-Driven ‘Marriage Crisis,’” a lecture given in conjunction with Black History Month by Dr. LaGuana Gray from the department of history at the University of Texas – San Antonio, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 in the Events Center at the Lincoln Parish Library.
• A screening of Ang Lee’s 1994 film, “Eat Drink Man Woman,” that portrays a Chinese father and his three daughters seeking love and happiness at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22 in Wyly Tower Auditorium.
• “Women of Angola Prison,” a lecture given by Dr. Marianne Fisher-Giorlando from the department of criminology at Grambling State University, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 in the University Hall Presentation Theatre.
• “Women in Louisiana History,” a lecture given by Dr. Janet Allured, a professor of history and director of the women’s studies programs at McNeese State University, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29 in the University Hall Presentation Theatre.

Also, undergraduate students in every discipline at Tech are eligible to participate in a research paper competition. Research papers related to topics concerning women should be submitted to Stoff at lstoff@latech.edu by March 31.
Women’s History Month events at Louisiana Tech are made possible by financial and other support from the department of history, Phi Alpha Theta,the Student Organization Grant Committee, the Association of Women Students, the Lincoln Parish Library and the students of History 475: Women in History from this winter quarter.
