Apr 4, 2012 | Engineering and Science

The Louisiana Tech chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) has been named the 2011-2012 National Distinguished Chapter of the Year.
The group received the honor during the 38th Annual NSBE Convention held last week in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The National Distinguished Chapter of the Year is the highest award any collegiate chapter can receive and recognizes the best chapter in the nation for exemplifying the NSBE mission statement.  Louisiana Tech’s chapter also received the NSBE’s Retention Program Award honoring their new Engineering Retention Program.
In addition to the Chapter of the Year designation, the national awards come with cash prizes totaling $10,000.  The Tech chapter plans to use the funds to improve its programs and community service projects.
The Louisiana Tech NSBE chapter has been named the 2011-2012 Region 5 Chapter of the Year, which is the highest collegiate award for the region, and is also the Region 5 Technical Out-Reach Community Help (TORCH) Chapter of the Year, along with Texas A&M University and Prairie View A&M University, and the Most Innovative TORCH Chapter of the Year.
Nationally, there are over 120 collegiate chapters of NSBE.  The Louisiana Tech NSBE chapter is in the Vanguard Region of NSBE, which includes all the chapters in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
The NSBE mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible, black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
