The College of Engineering and Science has announced its 2011-2012 Outstanding Faculty and Staff.
Recognition is given for outstanding innovative education, transformative research, national recognition, service to the College, and initiative in leadership during the 2011-2012 academic year.   Outstanding post-doctoral students and faculty are also honored.  Chosen by the College’s Leadership, the awardees are announced during the College’s annual fall faculty and staff meeting.
Dr. Ramu Ramachandran, associate dean for research and professor of chemistry, and Dr. Pedro Derosa, associate professor of physics, were recognized for their contributions to innovative education.  Ramachandran has improved the quality of graduate education at Louisiana Tech through his graduate-level research methods course and provided outstanding outreach through his leadership in the LaSIGMA Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Derosa has mentored undergraduate and graduate students and provided excellence in education.
Dr. Teresa Murray, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, and Dr. Niel Crews, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, were recognized for their contributions to transformative research within the College. Murray has successfully secured research funding while maintaining high-quality teaching.  Her last proposal to the National Institutes of Health earned a near perfect score from the agency. Crews has made outstanding efforts in securing research funding, outreach to minority students, and success in teaching, and contributed to NASA’s testing of microfluidic devices at zero gravity.
Dr. Galen Turner, associate dean of graduate studies and professor of mathematics and statistics; Dr. Heath Tims, assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Dr. Michael Swanbom, lecturer of mechanical engineering; and Dr. Kelly Crittenden, associate professor of mechanical engineering, were acknowledged for their contributions to gaining national recognition for the College and University.  Turner, Tims, Swanbom and Crittenden have worked with the Cyber Innovation Center in Bossier City to develop the Cyber Discovery Camps that are being expanded nationwide.  The group has provided national leadership in cyber education and outreach in these efforts.
Dr. Lee Sawyer, professor of physics; Dr. Marcus Wobisch, assistant professor of physics; and Dr. Z.D. Greenwood, professor of physics, were acknowledged for their contributions in international recognition for the College and University. Sawyer, Wobisch and Greenwood led the Tech team at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. This team was instrumental in the discovery of the Higgs boson particle.
Dr. James Spaulding, director of the Biological Support Service in the Biomedical Engineering Center, was recognized for exemplary dedication, commitment and service to the College and its faculty and students.  Spaulding has helped guide research and ensure safety in the Biomedical Engineering Labs.
Dr. Jenna Carpenter, associate dean for administration and strategic initiatives and professor of mathematics and statistics; Dr. David Hall, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Dr. Katie Evans, associate professor of mathematics and statistics; Dr. Chad O’Neal, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Dr. Collin Wick, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. Daniella Mainardi, associate professor of chemical engineering; and Dr. Sumeet Dua, professor of computer science, were recognized for their leadership initiative.
Carpenter has provided national leadership in advancing the success of women in engineering and science. She was also recognized at the White House for these efforts. Hall, Evans, O’Neal, Wick, Mainardi and Dua were recognized for their roles as Co-Leaders of the College Strategic Plan team. The group helped develop the new 2020 College strategic plan, which begins implementation this year.
