Tech’s Society of Women Engineers to attend national conference
Thirty-two members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at Louisiana Tech University will be attending this week’s National SWE Conference in Houston, Texas to participate in a variety of professional development sessions, hear from women engineers in positions of national leadership, and participate in a career fair featuring over 250 companies and universities.
The group, comprised of 20 women and 12 men, is the largest SWE contingent from Louisiana Tech to attend the national conference.
“Attending the national conference is such an outstanding experience for these students,” said Dr. Jenna Carpenter, associate dean of administration and strategic initiatives in the College of Engineering and Science and Tech’s SWE faculty advisor. “Not only do they have an opportunity to meet and network with several thousand women engineers, but it helps them grasp the breadth of opportunities that an engineering degree provides.”
Louisiana Tech’s SWE has won four national awards in the past two years for its outreach and professional development programs on campus. It has also been attracting between 70 and 100 students to each of its meetings this year.
Louisiana Tech’s participation at this year’s national conference is being supported by donations from ExxonMobil, former SWE members and current ExxonMobil employees Dela Jakub-Wood and Valessa Sprately. Tech’s student members have also done some local fundraising to help pay for the trip.
Companies expected to attend the fair include Disney, Ford Motor Company, Genetech, MIT Lincoln Labs, Cisco and John Deere. After attending last year’s conference, Louisiana Tech students earned internship opportunities at Toyota, Chrysler, GE and Texas Instruments.
SWE’s mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity. Louisiana Tech’s SWE is proud to have approximately one-third male members who support the various outreach activities of the organization.
