Kennedy to serve as president of health information management board

Dr. Angela Kennedy, professor and chair of the Health Informatics and Information Management program at Louisiana Tech University, was recently elected to serve as President of the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Board of Directors, beginning in 2013.
“It’s an honor to be chosen by my colleagues to lead our professional association,” Kennedy said. “I’m delighted to have this opportunity.”
Kennedy is a Registered Health Information Administrator and Certified Healthcare Quality Professional with 24 years of experience in the health information and informatics field.  She has previously served on the AHIMA Board of Directors and, in 2007, chaired the association’s business and audit team. She was also named an AHIMA Triumph Award winner, receiving a national honor for mentoring and has served on the organization’s education and strategies committee.
“As president-elect, Angela will lend her expertise in guiding the health information management profession to assure clinicians and patients have accurate and secure information to make important health decisions,” AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon said.

Chair of Louisiana Tech’s Department of Health Informatics and Information Management, Kennedy is a two-time graduate of Louisiana Tech having earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Administration in 1994 and a master’s degree in education in 1996.  Kennedy also holds a MBA from Nova Southeastern University (1996) and a certificate in Health Informatics from the University of Connecticut.
Kennedy’s career experience includes serving in areas such as health information, admissions, utilization, cancer registry, medical staff services, quality management and quality and project management consultant for rural health information systems implementation. Her experience also includes 14 years of service in higher education in the areas of instruction, administration and research.
Kennedy has served two terms as president of the Louisiana Health Information Management Association (LHIMA) and has received that organization’s Distinguished Member and Career Achievement awards.  She most recently served as Board Chairman for the Commission on Health Informatics and Information Management.  She has also served as president for the Louisiana Health Information Systems Society (LAHIMSS).
