— Seniors using annual project conference to help solve complex industry, community issues —

The College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University will hold its 2013 Senior Projects Conference Friday, proving a platform for senior students to showcase their skills and their collaborations with community and industry partners.

The public and campus community is invited to attend the event, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Great Room of University Hall on the Louisiana Tech campus with refreshments and remarks from Napper.  Individual presentations will be held in break-out rooms in University Hall, Bogard Hall, Carson Taylor Hall and other engineering facilities.  A program outlining the scope and location of the presentations will be passed out at the kick-off.

“The conference has been designed to permit our seniors to demonstrate a part of what they have learned in their curricula,” said Dr. Stan Napper, dean of the College of Engineering and Science.  “The annual conference is a highlight of the year, enabling seniors in all undergraduate programs to sharpen and demonstrate their professional skills.”

One community project that the students have been invited to assist with is the planned Tarbutton Road Interchange at I-20 and Frontage Road in Lincoln Parish.  The Louisiana Tech students have been asked to design the roads, the intersections, traffic controls and approaches as well as possible gas station locations near the site.

“The senior design projects provide students with the last challenge needed to prove they’re ready for the workplace,” said Dr. Mel Corley, director of mechanical engineering at Louisiana Tech.  “Senior capstone projects are primarily rich educational experiences that require students to integrate all of the topics they have studied in their college careers.

“Successful completion of a year-long design project experience prepares students to enter the professional ranks confident of their ability to guide a real-world project through to a successful completion.”

Other projects include the Smart Irrigation System, a small scale, weather-based irrigation device capable of making irrigation adjustments throughout the season with minimal human intervention; the General Electric Senior Design Project where students were asked to improve the Shreveport plant’s voltage regulator assembly area; the Alliance Compressors Senior Design Project in which students were asked to address a discrepancy in time and production numbers with one of the Natchitoches company’s assembly lines; and the NASA ROVIE which will search the NASA launch pads for foreign objects and debris.
