The College of Education at Louisiana Tech University will host its annual Summer Math Fair, July 23-24 at the A. E. Phillips Laboratory School on the Tech campus.

The event will take place each day from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in A. E. Phillips’ Multipurpose Room and will be filled with a variety of hands-on fun and math experiences.  The Summer Math Fair is free of charge with no pre-registration required.

“The goal of the math fair is twofold,” said Dr. Julie Holmes, assistant professor of education at Louisiana Tech.  “First, this provides an opportunity for my teacher candidates to have a chance to teach math concepts to students.  Since they are taking the class in the summer, they do not have an opportunity to teach a lesson in a regular classroom. Secondly, we are providing a service to local students and parents by giving them a place to come, free of charge, to brush up on math skills during the summer.

“My teacher candidates will be providing additional resources, such as practice sheets and websites sources, that can be taken home to extend the experience.”

Students who just completed grades 1-3 are welcome to come to the July 23 session and students who just completed grades 4-6 attending on July 24.  Heather Bowling, educational consultant with Usborne Books & More, will also be at the event with books and resources available for purchase to help your child with math skills.  The books and resources are very “user friendly” and easy for parents to use to help give their children a jump on math skills.
