A Louisiana Tech business professor will speak Friday at the United Nations (UN) on his work as a co-founder of Statistics Without Borders, an international initiative established to encourage the use of applied mathematics to resolve social issues in developing nations.

Dr. James Cochran

Dr. James J. Cochran, the Bank of Ruston – Barnes, Thompson and Thurman Endowed Professor in Marketing and associate professor of quantitative analysis in Louisiana Tech’s College of Business, will give a presentation titled “Statistics Without Borders, the International Operations Research & Statistics Education & Applications Initiative and Pascal’s Triangle of Research for Africa.”  He will address the UN’s Statistics Division in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

In addition, Cochran will also talk about his efforts to establish a network of researchers to collaborate on research problems across cultures in Africa.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for Dr. Cochran and certainly speaks to the expertise and knowledge Dr. Cochran offers to other colleagues as well as to business students at Louisiana Tech University,” said Dr. James Lumpkin, dean of the College of Business.

Cochran received his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Cincinnati in 1997 and joined the Louisiana Tech College of Business faculty in 2000. He is considered a leading authority in the areas of sample-based and Bayesian optimization, statistical methods, computational statistics, statistical learning and mathematics education.
