Louisiana Tech director to discuss Louisiana music
Louisiana Tech’s director of the School of Literature and Language will serve as a panelist for the Louisiana Soundtrack Experience series.
This celebration of Louisiana’s music will make a stop in Ferriday Saturday, August 3, with a program titled, “Great Balls of Fire: Delta Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll in Jerry Lee’s Hometown.” Dr. Susan Roach, who also serves as coordinator of technical writing, will be a panelist at 3 p.m. to discuss “Preserving Our Musical Heritage.”
“North Louisiana traditional music has been one of my research areas in folklore since I moved back to Louisiana in 1978,” Roach said. “As a folklorist for the Louisiana Regional Folklife Program from 1998-2009, I continued to document, present and write about traditional old-time country music, gospel, Delta blues and rockabilly music.”
Roach has also worked with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Louisiana Folklife Festival.
The panel on Saturday will be moderated by “Oxford American” Louisiana Music issue guest editor Alex Rawls. Besides Roach, it will also feature musician Kenny Bill Stinson, author J.D. Davis and songwriter Tommy Polk.
The event, which is offered by the Louisiana Office of Tourism and “Oxford American,” will feature a concert with Kenny Bill Stinson, Easy Eddie & the Partyrockers, and The Matthew Davisdson Band, and a movie screening of “Sunshine by the Stars: Celebrating Louisiana Music.”
Previous events in this series were held in Shreveport, Natchitoches and Lafayette, and the final event will take place Nov. 16 in New Orleans. For more information, visit www.LouisianaSoundtrack.com.
