Dr. Lucio Miele, professor of medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry, and radiation oncology, and director of the Cancer Institute at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, will present a lecture titled, “Mechanism-based targeting of Notch signaling in breast cancer,” at 3:30 p.m., September 16 in University Hall on the campus of Louisiana Tech University.

Miele’s lecture will officially open Louisiana Tech’s “New Frontiers in Biomedical Research: Impacts on Health and Society” seminar series.  By interacting with leaders in biological research and biomedical engineering, the series seeks to continue increasing Louisiana Tech’s impacts on science through everyday advances in technology and through new discoveries that expand the knowledge of biology and the treatment of human disease.

“The goal of the entire series is to bring top researchers to Louisiana Tech to help build our research program and collaborative research network,” said Dr. Jaime Newman, assistant professor of biological sciences at Louisiana Tech and coordinator of the seminar series.  “In addition to supporting researchers and students, some of these guests will also have the opportunity to interact with the Ruston community where they will talk about the current state of cancer diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.”

Newman says that cancer is an increasing cause of death in our society and statistics indicate that the southern region of the United States suffers from a higher incidence of cancer.  Therefore, it is important to educate the community on the causes and lifestyle choices that promote cancer and methods for addressing this issue.

“The Lincoln Health Foundation supports the mission of educating the community in an effort to improve health outcomes from Lincoln Parish,” Newman said.  “As part of that mission, they are supporting two lectures for the community presented by experts in the field of cancer biology who will help to educate people on the risks, causes, and treatment for cancer.”

In addition to his lecture at Louisiana Tech, Miele will also give a special presentation titled, “The burden of cancer health disparities in the Mid-South” at 6:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center.  Both lectures are co-sponsored by the Lincoln Health Foundation, and are free to attend and open to the community.

“We are delighted to sponsor the cancer lectures arranged through Louisiana Tech’s biomedical seminar series,” said Norman Hanes, CEO of Lincoln Health Foundation.  “Cancer was ranked as a top 5 health issue in a Lincoln Parish health needs assessment funded by the Foundation in 2008.  The correlation between lifestyle choices and cancer is significant, and we believe education is the first step towards influencing the incidence of cancer in Lincoln Parish.”

Seminars during the series are sponsored by the Lincoln Health Foundation, ADVANCE Faculty Program, Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science and its Center for Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Science (CBERS), and the College of Applied and Natural Sciences and its School of Biological Sciences.
