Louisiana Tech University’s Department of Kinesiology will host an Adaptive Sports Seminar and National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, February 7-8 in Scotty Robertson Memorial Gymnasium and the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center on the Louisiana Tech campus.

Jared Rehm, adaptive sports specialist and head wheelchair basketball coach for Auburn University, will present a seminar titled, “Adaptive Sports: Past, Present, and Future Directions within the Community” at 4:00 p.m., February 7 in Scotty Robinson Memorial Gymnasium Room 207.

Immediately following Rehm’s presentation, students from Louisiana Tech and Grambling State University will compete in intramural wheelchair basketball games, in cooperation with Rehm and Pam Carey of Louisiana Games Uniting Mind and Body (G.U.M.B.O.), Inc.

The inaugural National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will tip off at 8:00 a.m., February 8 at Louisiana Tech’s Lambright Sports and Wellness Center.  Teams from Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas will compete in a day-long, round-robin tournament.

“The adaptive sports seminar and wheelchair basketball tournament will provide an opportunity for the Louisiana Tech and Ruston communities to experience and become familiar with physical activity opportunities for individuals with disabilities,” said Dr. Braden Romer, assistant professor of kinesiology at Louisiana Tech.  “A secondary goal is the hope that the tournament will spark interest within the Louisiana Tech community in beginning an organized adaptive sports program for individuals in north Louisiana.”

All events, on both days, are free and open to the public.  Louisiana Tech faculty, staff, and students as well as members of the community are invited to attend.
