Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering and Science will offer students an opportunity to broaden their data engineering skills through a newly developed multidisciplinary minor in data center engineering that will begin in the spring 2014 quarter.

Although the program is designed for cyber engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science students, it will be open to any Louisiana Tech student who is interested in working with the complex environments of modern data centers in government, industry and academia.  The minor will provide students with additional skills to compete in the growing big data center job sector.

Dr. Sumeet Dua, academic director of computer science, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, and industrial engineering, and program coordinator, said the minor will help prepare students to meet the various needs of data centers.

“Data centers are a critical component of the cyberinfrastructure of a variety of organizations,” said Dua.  “This minor offers a unique opportunity for our students to unravel the design paradigms of data center engineering and its applications. The interdisciplinary nature of the minor will allow students to cross-pollinate ideas and prepare themselves to avail opportunities in this rapidly emerging discipline.”

Dr. Hisham Hegab, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Science, believes the new minor will also help federal agencies looking for more recruits and talent.

“We have had several students intern with a federal agency that is very interested in preparing more graduates to enter into jobs associated with supporting these complex facilities,” Hegab said.

The data center engineering minor builds upon the strength of the innovative College of Engineering and Science “Living With The Lab” curriculum, leveraging hands-on projects as well as theory-based classes to increase knowledge, skills, and ability within multiple disciplines, including power, cooling and systems management in a variety of fields.

Hegab asserts that the new minor will not only provide students with more opportunities, but will provide a more specialized workforce for employers here in north Louisiana.

“The College developed this minor program in response to a growing need in this area. The north Louisiana region is an attractive geographic location for potential new data centers.”
