Sixteen undergraduate and graduate students from across the Louisiana Tech University campus were recognized Wednesday for their outstanding oral and poster presentations during the 2014 Undergraduate/Graduate Student Research Symposium held recently in Scotty Robertson Memorial Gymnasium

Louisiana Tech President Les Guice hosted the students in his office in Wyly Tower and congratulated them as they were presented with plaques and certificates of achievement.

“These students are good examples of continuous learning and of education that grows and magnifies the classroom instruction.  And they have excelled in that experience,” said Dr. Stan Napper, vice president for research and development at Louisiana Tech.  “We congratulate them and their advisors for their dedication and commitment.”

During the symposium, faculty judges representing each of Louisiana Tech’s academic colleges reviewed the posters and listened to students describe the contents of their poster/project.  A group of faculty judges also listened to and rated the students’ six minute oral presentations, which were held in an adjacent classroom.

“The Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Symposium is an excellent way to showcase the research across campus and allow for collaboration among researchers,” said Dr. Melinda Bryan, symposium coordinator and associate professor and director of Louisiana Tech’s Doctor of Audiology program.  “This event is extremely important as the university moves forward as a leading research institution in north Louisiana.”

Awards were given for the first, second and third place presentations in each category.  The top four presenters among the undergraduate oral presentations and the top six presenters from the undergraduate poster presentations earned a spot representing Louisiana Tech at the 3rd Annual Academic Summit for the University of Louisiana System, April 11-12 at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Academic Summit is designed to be a celebration of academic excellence at UL System universities and will encompass the System’s service-learning conference, a student art exhibition, and undergraduate research day.

The 2014 Undergraduate/Graduate Student Research Symposium winners from Louisiana Tech are as follows:

Undergraduate Oral Presentations

• First Place: Stephen Green, Advisor: Dr. Thea Edwards – Does Nitrate Cause Type 1 Diabetes in Alligators?
• Second Place: Joshua Mattison, Advisor: Dr. Joe L. Alexander – Musical Performance/Analysis of Tango: Sextet for Low Brass Ensemble
• Third Place: Aaliyah Muhammad, Lindsy Trisler, & Bailey Craighead, Advisor: Mr. Brad Deal – Huckleberry Trails Entry Pavilion

Also invited to present at the 3rd Annual Academic Summit

• Joshua Tully, Advisor: Dr. Yuri Lvov – Functional Protein-Clay Nanotube Composites
