Dr. Jun-Ing Ker, associate professor and program chair of industrial engineering at Louisiana Tech University, has won the 2014 Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) Faculty Advisor Recognition Award for the Southeast Region.

The award recognizes a single faculty advisor from the 14-chapter region who has contributed to the IIE’s Southeast Region by supporting officers and student activities as a teacher, an advisor and a mentor.

“I am honored to receive this award and pleased that students found my advice and guidance meaningful,” said Ker.  “I appreciate the effort that IIE officers have made to provide professional development opportunities for industrial engineering students at Louisiana Tech.”

Austin Young, who is president of the Louisiana Tech student chapter of the IIE and who made the nomination, said that Ker exemplifies the award criteria.

“Dr. Ker understands his students and that’s why we nominated him.  He makes it his job to provide help in any area students might need guidance, both in and out of academics,” Young said.

One of the requirements for nominating a faculty advisor for the IIE award is that the nominating chapter meets the chapter health requirements as defined by IIE.  This includes student members organizing activities such as plant trips and professional seminars on campus.

Dr. Sumeet Dua, professor and director for Louisiana Tech’s computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, cyber engineering and electrical engineering technology programs, said that the award shows both the Louisiana Tech focus on students and Ker’s outstanding work with them.

“This award recognizes the outstanding service that Dr. Ker provides to our students outside of the classrooms to create a rewarding educational experience for them,” Dua said.  “It is also a testament to the emphasis that our faculty place on student mentoring. We are proud of Dr. Ker’s accomplishments.”

IIE is an international, nonprofit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training, research and development of industrial engineering, and is dedicated to supporting the industrial engineering profession.
