Faculty member presents at Central American conference
The Garnie W. McGinty professor of history and interim associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Louisiana Tech University presented research at the 12th Central American Historical Congress in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Dr. Stephen Webre was one of about 600 scholars from more than a dozen countries who gathered at the University of El Salvador for the conference.
During the five-day meeting, Webre presented “The Central American Encomienda in the Late Seventeenth Century.”
In collaboration with historian Coralia Gutiérrez Alvarez of the University of Puebla, Mexico, Webre also organized and coordinated the congress’s program section devoted to the Spanish colonial period, consisting of 19 panels with 54 presentations.
Held biennially since 1992, the Central American Historical Congress is the most important regular professional meeting for researchers specializing in the history of the region, which includes southern Mexico, plus the republics of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
A member of the Louisiana Tech faculty since 1982, Stephen Webre is a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and holds the M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Tulane University. A specialist in Latin American history, his publications include three books and numerous articles in professional journals. Webre is a corresponding member of the Guatemalan Academy of Geography and History.
