Louisiana Tech chapter of Sigma Xi receives Chapter Program of Excellence Award
Louisiana Tech University’s chapter of Sigma Xi, an interdisciplinary honors research society that encourages collaborative research and community outreach, has been recognized with a Chapter Program of Excellence Award for 2013-2014.
The award is given annually to the top two to three percent of Sigma Xi chapters in the United States. Louisiana Tech’s chapter will be formally recognized at this week’s Annual Meeting and International Research Conference in Glendale, Ariz., and in Sigma Xi’s publication, “American Scientist.”
Sigma Xi has approximately 60,000 members in more than 500 chapters in the U.S., Canada, and 20 other countries, and was founded in 1886 “to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in fields of science and engineering.”
“The interdisciplinary programs at Louisiana Tech make this a perfect place to promote the goals of Sigma Xi,” said Dr. Jamie Newman, chapter president and assistant professor of biological sciences at Louisiana Tech. “In 2013-2014, the Louisiana Tech chapter inducted five new student and faculty members into the society, held monthly brown-bag lunch meetings where faculty and graduate students gave research talks, and held an end of year reception to honor new members.
“The end-of-year reception also served to recognize Joshua Johnson, a graduate student working with Dr. Terri Maness, who was awarded a Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research, to award an Outstanding Undergraduate Award to Victoria Bamburg, who works with Dr. Thomas Bishop, and an Outstanding Graduate Student Award to Daniel French, who graduated with a Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences this past spring. The keynote speaker at the reception was Dr. Dave Guerin, who spoke about methods to promote and communicate research.”
Louisiana Tech’s Sigma Xi chapter continues to hold monthly brown bag lunch meetings and is developing a partnership program with SciTEC in the College of Education that pairs local teachers with Louisiana Tech faculty and students to promote interactions between the campus and the community. It will also be hosting Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Robert Clarke, dean for research and professor of oncology at Georgetown University, on March 23.
Current officers for Louisiana Tech’s chapter of Sigma Xi are as follows:
• President: Dr. Jamie Newman, assistant professor of biological sciences
• Vice President: Dr. Marisa Orr, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
• Treasurer: Dr. Mark Gibson, professor of forestry
• Secretary: Dr. Terri Maness, assistant professor of biological sciences
