The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has selected Dr. Prerna Dua, associate professor of health informatics and information management at Louisiana Tech University, to feature nationally as part of their “Faces of AMIA” website showcase.
Dua, who also serves as director of the health informatics master’s degree program at Louisiana Tech, is one of just 20 health and medical information professionals from around the United States to be highlighted on the AMIA homepage. The AMIA’s mission is to transform health care through trusted science, education and the practice of informatics, and to connect professionals and students interested in informatics.

“I feel honored and humbled to be among the peers who have been highlighted in these series,” says Dua. “The AMIA is a professional scientific association having members representing 43 countries from the technical areas that I have been professionally committed towards for several years. This recognition is special to me and gives me perspective and a direction in reaching my professional goals.”
Dua says this recognition is also a testament to the interdisciplinary focus towards medical informatics research that has been embraced at Louisiana Tech. “Computational tools and technologies have become the cornerstone for medical informatics research, and Louisiana Tech is being recognized as a thriving player in that arena.”
Professionals in the heath informatics and information management field collect, integrate and analyze primary and secondary health care data as well as disseminate information and manage information resources related to the research, planning, provision, and evaluation of health care services. Louisiana Tech’s programs focus on the development of skills for the management of health-related information and the systems used to perform these tasks and to support enterprise operations and clinical and business decision-making in healthcare or related organizations.
“As teachers, it is our responsibility to constantly create opportunities for our students,” explains Dua. “A health informatics and information management faculty member at Louisiana Tech being recognized by the premier professional organization in our industry puts our program at the forefront of national and international players in the area. It is also recognition that our students deserve and puts them in a position where their education and skills are highly respected, which will aid them in seeking jobs and advanced opportunities once they graduate.”
Dua earned her Ph.D. in computational analysis and modeling at Louisiana Tech in 2006. She also holds a master’s degree in computer applications from Rajiv Gandhi Technical University in Bhopal, India, and a bachelor’s degree in English literature and psychology from Barkatullah University in Bhopal, India.
