COES students attend 2015 Undergraduate Women in Physics Conference
Four Louisiana Tech University physics students recently attended the prestigious 2015 Undergraduate Women in Physics Conference (CUWiP) at the University of Mississippi – one of six regional meetings nationally sponsored by the American Physical Society and the National Science Foundation.
Representing Louisiana Tech were Caylin Colson VanHook, a sophomore electrical engineering and physics major; Rachel Rogers, a sophomore physics major; Breyana Adams, a freshman math and physics major; and Sarah Pazos, a freshman physics major.
“These young ladies are among our best physics majors and Louisiana Tech was well represented,” says Dr. Lee Sawyer, academic director for Louisiana Tech’s chemistry and nanosystems engineering programs, and academic director and program chair of physics.
At the event, the students networked with other women in physics as well as experiencing the conference atmosphere and learning information about graduate school and professional options in physics.
This marks the second consecutive year that Louisiana Tech physics students have attended the conference.
“It is always beneficial for students to attend a conference like this,” said Dr. Jenna Carpenter, associate dean of undergraduate studies for the College of Engineering and Science. “It gives them a broader perspective of the field and the career opportunities in physics. It is also a great way to network with other women in physics in our region, as well as build a stronger community for women in physics on our own campus.”
Sawyer says that Louisiana Tech doubled the number of attendees this year and he hopes that number will double again next year. In addition, he hopes that, in the future, Louisiana Tech will have presenters at this conference and become a host university.
