Louisiana Tech, Lincoln Parish Library event celebrates Black History Month
As February is Black History Month, Louisiana Tech University historians are joining forces with the Lincoln Parish Library to present “Hidden Histories: The Black Towns Project,” a lecture by Rhonda Ragsdale, an associate professor at Lone Star College-North Harris in Houston, Texas.
Ragsdale will introduce listeners to the inspiring story of industrious African Americans who resisted racial oppression by founding autonomous towns across the United States, and particularly in the American South. The talk is based on Ragsdale’s doctoral dissertation, which she is completing at Rice University. For more information, visit her website, “The Black Towns Project: A History of Black Towns in the United States” at http://www.blacktownsproject.org/.
“Hidden Histories” is sponsored by the Louisiana Tech department of history, the Lincoln Parish Library, and Lambda-Rho Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, History Honor Society, Inc.
The talk will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Lincoln Parish Library. The event is free and open to the public.
For additional information, contact Dr. David M. Anderson, associate professor of history and coordinator of Black History Month events, at 318-257-5253 or by email at davida@latech.edu.
