Young actors and actresses from grades 2 and up as well as college students are encouraged to audition for Barry’s adaptation of this classic tale, directed by Paul Crook, associate professor of theatre at Louisiana Tech. Public performances of Sleeping Beauty are scheduled for January 26-31, 2016 in Howard Auditorium.
Auditions will begin at 6:00 p.m. for children grade 2-6 and at 7:00 p.m. for grade 7 and up as well as for all college students, on both December 7 and 8. Students in grade 2-6 should come prepared to read a short poem. All others will participate in a cold read that will consist of reading a scene from the show chosen by the director. Everyone who wishes to participate is requested to wear audition-appropriate attire.
In the story of Sleeping Beauty, Carabosse, the wicked witch, sentences the young Princess Aurora to death by spinning wheel, but the good fairies (the slim Fairy Liquid and the plump Fairy Cakes) commute this to a long boring sleep – a sleep from which the Princess can only be woken by a kiss from her true love. Sleeping Beauty features a loveable cast of characters, including a madcap nanny, wacky fairies, seriously challenged henchmen, and of course, Princess Aurora herself.
