According to the ensemble’s director, Dr. Gregory Lyons, “This will be one of the most ambitious programs the ensemble has attempted in recent years.”
Percussion is a panoply of instruments, which are mainly struck or shaken in order to generate their sound. The first works ever composed for the Percussion Ensemble date back to the early 20th Century. One of those pieces, “Pulse” (1939) by Henry Cowell, will be featured at the concert.
Percussion ensembles are also occasionally known to perform transcriptions from the symphonic repertoire. A new arrangement of “Le Jardin Féerique,” the final movement from Maurice Ravel’s Ma mere l’Oye (1911) for orchestra, will also be performed.
The concert will take place Monday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Howard Auditorium, and admission is free. Donations will be accepted at the door. For more information, contact Dr. Lyons at (318) 257-5470 or glyons@latech.edu.
