COES hosts over 1,000 students, teachers for Engineering and Science Day
More than 1,000 students and teachers from high schools across the region gathered at Louisiana Tech University to take part in hands-on experiences and learn engineering and science applications at the 69th Engineering and Science Day.
The Engineering and Science Day events are coordinated by the Louisiana Tech Engineering and Science Association (ESA) with student leaders in organizations throughout the College of Engineering and Science (COES) design and deliver activities for the teachers and students in attendance. This year, more than 200 COES students contributed to and helped with the event.
This year’s Engineering and Science Day began with a keynote speech by College of Engineering and Science alumnus and 2015 Louisiana Tech Alumnus of the Year, Mr. George Baldwin. Afterward, attendees divided into groups to participate in hands-on activities, observe demonstrations designed and delivered by Engineering and Science students, and learn about on-campus research from students, faculty and staff.
“Our students do such a great job of putting on this event that showcases engineering and science to high school students from across the region,” Dr. Heath Tims, associate dean for undergraduate studies at the College of Engineering and Science said. “It is always great to see so many high school students participate. It is our hope that many of the students who came to Engineering and Science Day will come to Tech and give back themselves at future engineering and science days.”
Luke Villermin, ESA president and senior mechanical engineering student, says that the success of Engineering and Science Day is due to the collaboration that ESA receives from students, faculty and staff.
“The Engineering and Science Association has received an abundance of help and support from both the student body and faculty in the College,” Villermin said. “Due to the record registration numbers that we achieved this year, we had to reconsider E&S Day planning aspects such as bus parking, tour guide coordination, and room assignments.”
Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science also offers annual Engineering and Science Days in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Dallas and Houston.
Engineering and Science Day at Louisiana Tech is part of a weeklong series of events organized by the ESA that include teambuilding and networking opportunities for current students as well as opportunities for future students to learn about engineering and science at Louisiana Tech.
