Music Department selects Alumnus of the Year, Honor Recital soloists
Louisiana Tech University’s department of music has announced its Alumnus of the Year and Honors Recital soloists, and will feature the honorees at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Howard Auditorium.
Tony Boutté was selected as the 2017 Alumnus of the Year. Boutté earned a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance in 1982 and went on to complete graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Maryland for his doctorate.
He has established himself as a first-rate tenor singer of many styles, including opera, art song, oratorio and chamber music from the Baroque period to today. Performing regularly in the United States and Europe, one of his biggest successes to date was as the title character in the world premiere production of Douglas J. Cuomo’s “Arjuna’s Dilemma,” produced at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Opera News praised his work saying, “His performance was so pure and emotional, his tenor so exciting…” The New York Times agreed, saying that he gave “a vulnerable and anguished performance.”
Boutté is an associate professor of music at Sam Houston State University in Houston where he is the co-director of ARCANUM, a baroque ensemble now based in Houston, and is artistic director of New American Voices, an initiative created to champion and perform new American works for voice through the collaboration of singer and composer.
Boutté will be on campus April 28 to perform for the students, present a voice masterclass and receive the award during the Honors Recital.
The Honors Recital features select students who have excelled in the area of performance throughout their time at Louisiana Tech. This year’s soloists are Tyler Cating, guitar; Bethany Cardenas, soprano; Mary Rudd piano; Cody Ford, euphonium; and Cody Little, marimba.
