School of Design to open Mathys exhibit

ornamental artLouisiana Tech University’s School of Design will open its latest exhibit with a public reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 in the Bethea and Moffett Galleries of the Taylor Visual Arts Center.

The Phoebe Allen Mathys Collection, featuring work by Mathys, Mary Moffett, Kelly Fearing, Elizabeth Bethea, and more artists, will be on display through Oct. 5.

Mathys received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art Education from Louisiana Tech. As Professor of Art, Mathys specialized in two-dimensional design, color theory, and advanced media and presentation techniques. Her paintings were included in over 150 juried and invitation exhibitions locally, regionally, and nationally. Mathys created the two murals that hang in the theater in the Monroe Civic Center complex and was honored as an American Artists of Renown by the Arkansas Art Center.

After 33 years of teaching at Louisiana Tech, Mathys was honored Professor Emeritus status in the College of Liberal Arts.
