COES to hold Design and Research Conference

Apr 27, 2022 | Engineering and Science, Research, Students

The Louisiana Tech University College of Engineering and Science (COES) will hold its first Design and Research Conference in the Integrated Engineering and Science Building on May 5-6.

The Design and Research Conference will kick off at 5 p.m. May 5 as teams of first-year students present prototypes they’ve developed over the past three quarters, explain how they identified the need for the product and how they built the prototypes, and answer questions from judges and attendees. At the end of the night, top teams will receive awards for their projects.

COES seniors will present their work on May 6. Beginning at 1 p.m., seniors from all 14 engineering and science majors will present prototypes and research and explain how their projects will advance research and processes in their fields or how their prototypes will address shortcomings of products currently on the market.

The two-day event, which will be held throughout the Integrated Engineering and Science Building, is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public. Attendees will be able to interact with more than 200 freshman and senior teams during the conference.

“I’m excited to welcome members of the Louisiana Tech and Ruston communities to the inaugural COES Design and Research Conference,” said Dr. Hisham Hegab, COES Dean. “Every year, our first-year and senior students work hard to create solutions to real-world problems, and I’m pleased that, beginning this year, the expos will be combined into the same two-day conference event.”

“Our students produce amazing work from their freshman through senior years,” said Dr. Heath Tims, COES Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, “so having them showcase this to the public is a great opportunity. These student projects range from concepts that could change the world to projects that directly impact our local economy. This culminating experience allows students and our College the opportunity to showcase the type of work and impact that we have.”

Following the conference, the College will induct its newest members into the Order of the Engineer and celebrate its 2022 Distinguished Alumni.
