The Louisiana Tech University National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter won the “Louisiana Zone Most Outstanding Chapter of the Year” award at the 2022 NSBE Region V Fall Conference.

NSBE chapterThe Louisiana Tech chapter earned the Best in Louisiana award through its commitment to academic excellence and giving back. Community outreach, on-campus tutoring, and conference participation propelled the chapter to the top.

The chapter’s biggest community outreach event is “A Walk for Education,” an annual walk on Dr. Martin Luther King Day when members of NSBE and the Tech community walk through area neighborhoods, passing out information on the importance of higher education. Other outreach activities include neighborhood clean-ups, during which members pick up trash on the road and perform other community service projects for Ruston neighborhoods. The organization also holds Study Jamz on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Integrated Engineering and Science Building.

In addition to their busy academic and outreach schedules, NSBE members made time to attend the NSBE National Conference in Anaheim, California, and the NSBE Fall Region V Conference, and organize socials to connect new members with senior members through a mentor-mentee program and special events like movie nights and bowling nights.

“What makes NSBE so great is the people who are willing to sacrifice some of their personal time for the betterment of the organization,” said Michael Stubblefield II, Tech NSBE President. “They never stop coming up with ideas on how to be better and not to be complacent where we are at.”

“I’m extremely proud to be affiliated with such a hard-working and dedicated student organization,” added chapter advisor Dr. Miguel Gates, also program chair of Cyber Engineering and lecturer of Computer Science and Cyber Engineering. “These young men and women are part of the life blood of the Tech community and student body, and they work tirelessly to make an impact that is felt both near and far. This award is a reflection of that commitment. I expect nothing but excellence to continue from NSBE with their strong leadership in place.”
