Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) inducted more than 100 new members of the Order of the Engineer, an honorary organization dedicated to upholding the standards and dignity of the engineering professions.

The 122 initiates received their Engineer’s Rings at a ceremony following the Senior Projects Showcase portion of the COES Design and Research Conference on Friday, May 5.

Each inductee signed the Obligation of an Engineer and said the pledge aloud, vowing to use their skills as engineers to serve the public with integrity and honesty.

Retiring COES Dean Dr. Hisham Hegab and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Heath Tims, both members of the Order themselves, noted that joining the organization is an important step for an engineering professional.

“The Order of the Engineer pledge directly reflects the sense of ethics and standards that Louisiana Tech and the College of Engineering and Science set for our students,” Hegab said. “I’m pleased that so many of our engineering seniors have accepted the responsibility outlined in it.”

“These students’ eagerness to take the oath is a testament to the high educational standards and the sense of community that Tech engineering and science graduates carry throughout their careers,” Tims added. “It is inspiring to see them take an active interest in continuing to embrace those values throughout their careers.”

The Order of the Engineer is a national organization open to engineering seniors and graduates from colleges with ABET-accredited curricula, registered professional engineers, and exceptional engineers throughout the United States. It has been inducting members for more than 50 years.

Tech is one of only six universities in the state with an active Order of the Engineer link.
