Professor wins 2025 CUSA Faculty Achievement Award
Dr. Jamie Newman, Louisiana Tech University professor and newly appointed director of the School of Biological Sciences, was awarded the 2025 Conference USA Faculty Achievement Award. This award is given to one faculty member at each of the CUSA institutions, highlighting their dedication to teaching and commitment to their respective fields of study through service in their campus communities.
Newman’s passion for advancing research in the College of Applied and Natural Sciences led her to groundbreaking research in gene regulation and cell biology. Her research explores how stem cell behavior is influenced by environmental factors with potential for understanding and therapeutic possibilities in areas of regenerative medicine and disease treatment. On top of her research, Newman plays a crucial role in the VISTA Center which offers an undergraduate certificate — and soon a full degree program — in scientific visualization and produces materials for local clinics, research publications, and children’s books.
“It is an honor to have my work recognized by Conference USA with this award,” Newman said. “As a student, I had someone who introduced me to research and supported me in my journey through college and beyond. Through my courses, my research lab, my advising of student organizations, and my work with colleagues across campus, I strive to have the impact that my own professors had on me and my future. It is a privilege to be a part of Louisiana Tech students’ journeys.”
Newman is a proud advocate for STEM education and has secured more than $1.5 million in grants for developing research opportunities that ensure hands-on training in advanced laboratory techniques while collaborating with researchers across the country. She engages with the broader science community through outreach programs that encourage future generations of researchers.
“Dr. Newman has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the University’s mission to advance transformational learning,” said Louisiana Tech Provost Donna Thomas. “I was proud to nominate her for this recognition. This achievement reflects not only her passion for her work, but also her unwavering dedication to the success of her students.”
In addition to the CUSA Faculty Achievement Award, Newman has also received the University of Louisiana System Outstanding Faculty Award and the Louisiana Tech University Foundation Professorship Award during her 12 years at Tech. Newman’s award qualifies her as a nominee for the CUSA Professor of the Year award.
