Engineering professor receives state faculty professionalism award
Dr. Jay Wang, associate professor of civil engineering and construction engineering technology and program chair of civil engineering at Louisiana Tech University, has received the 2015 Engineering Faculty Professionalism Award from the Louisiana Engineering Foundation.
The award was presented to Wang at the 19th Joint Engineering Societies Conference held recently in Lafayette, Louisiana. Wang earned the honor for his professionalism as chair of the Louisiana Tech civil engineering program, which includes advising both graduate and undergraduate students and teaching, as well as serving as a role model for students and faculty.
“Dr. Wang has been a leader for our civil engineering program for several years and has been a great example and teacher for our students in the area of professional practice,” said Dr. Hisham Hegab, dean of Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science. “His recognition by the Louisiana Engineering Foundation is well deserved.”
As part of his teaching philosophy, Wang uses a hands-on approach to engineering, teaching primarily from practical design manuals rather than theoretical textbooks and providing students with hands-on training projects.
In 2014, Wang was selected as “Professor of the Year” by the Louisiana Tech American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter. In addition to his duties at Louisiana Tech, he is also active in local engineering organizations and in providing continuing education for registered engineers in industry.
Wang’s area of specialization is geotechnical engineering and numerical modeling and material behavior. He holds a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Alberta in Canada, a master’s degree in hydraulic structural engineering from Hohai University in China, and a bachelor’s in hydro-electric power engineering from Hohai University.
