NSBE to lead ‘A Walk for Education’ through local neighborhoods

The Louisiana Tech chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will hold its annual event, A Walk for Education, Jan. 21.

A Walk for Education is an outreach project that is open to all Louisiana Tech students and members of the Ruston community. During the walk, participants go door-to-door in predominantly underrepresented minority communities and pass out materials on scholarships, test preparation and educational and vocational opportunities, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Participants also discuss a variety of STEM activities, including those that children can engage in to build their skills before entering high school, with individuals throughout the neighborhoods.

The walk underscores NSBE’s mission to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”

Breakfast, on-site registration and sign in will begin at 9 a.m. in Tolliver Hall; at 9:45, participants will leave for the planned routes. Attendees will receive packets to distribute at the routes.
