Mechanical Engineering is the profession which deals with the design, development, testing, manufacturing, and maintenance of machines, systems, devices, and components for the betterment of society. Mechanical engineers are involved with such areas as:
- aerospace engineering
- automatic control systems
- automotive engineering
- chemicals, oil, and gas
- computer aided design and manufacturing
- energy conversion, utilization, and storage
- engineering materials
- environmental engineering
- machine design
- manufacturing processes
- medicine
- robotics
- stress analysis
- thermal systems
Mechanical engineers may deal with hardware as small as a microchip or as large as an aircraft carrier. They may work from the bottom of the ocean up to the weightless environment of interplanetary space. Of all the engineering disciplines, mechanical engineering is the most diversified and offers the largest selection of career paths. If you can see it or touch it, a mechanical engineer probably helped to create it.
