Honors Good Standing Policy

The following policy takes effect in full for the 2022-23 academic year.

  • In the following policy the term “academic year” refers to Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarter. Louisiana Tech Honors does not consistently offer Summer classes.

Honors Good Standing

To be considered in “good standing” in Louisiana Tech University Honors, a student must:

  • be in good standing with Louisiana Tech University by complying with all of its policies, including the “Code of Conduct” and the “Academic Honor Code”
  • maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) at or above 3.30
  • successfully complete 6 honors hours per academic year (from Fall Quarter to Spring Quarter) with a grade of B or higher until they have reached 15 total honors hours; a student who does not successfully complete 6 hours per academic year (from Fall Quarter to Spring Quarter) with a grade of B or higher will be considered inactive and removed from the program
  • complete the honors course requirements with earned grades of B or higher in all honors courses; grades of C and D may still count towards degree completion but not towards honors hours earned

Honors Probation

An honors student will be placed on probation if the cumulative GPA falls between 3.29 – 3.00.

If, after one quarter on probation, a student’s cumulative GPA:

  • reaches 3.30 or higher, the student will return to good standing
  • remains between 3.29 – 3.00, the student will remain on probation for an additional quarter
  • falls below a 3.00, the student will be dismissed from Honors

If, after two quarters on academic probation, a student’s cumulative GPA:

  • reaches 3.30 or higher, the student will return to good standing
  • remains below a 3.30, the student is dismissed from Honors

Any student on probation is strongly encouraged to meet with the Director or Assistant Director to discuss an action plan.

Honors Dismissal

An honors student will be dismissed from Honors if any of the following is true:

  • the student has a cumulative GPA below 3.00
  • the student is on probation for two consecutive quarters
  • a student has not successfully completed 6 honors hours per academic year (from Fall to Spring Quarter) with a grade of B or higher
  • it is mathematically impossible for the student to regain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 by the anticipated graduation date
  • the student will be unable to satisfy the honors course requirements before graduation

A student may appeal the dismissal if they fail to meet the requirements for medical reasons, military service, or documented personal reasons. Students who are dismissed from the program will be purged from all preregistered honors courses.

Reinstatement

A former Honors student who regains a cumulative GPA of 3.30 may request reinstatement in Honors by petitioning the Director. The Director will discuss honors course requirements with the student to determine whether it remains possible for the student to complete the curriculum. In deciding on reinstatement, the Director will consider the student’s standing with the University, progress toward degree, and ability to satisfy the honors course requirements.

Appeal of Dismissal

Students dismissed from Honors have failed to meet the expectations for good standing in the program.

Appeal of dismissal from Honors may be made by composing a letter to the Director stating the reasons for the appeal and explaining a clear plan for completing the specific honors program requirements or attaining the required GPA. Any appeal should include substantive supporting documentation attesting to the reason the student was unable to maintain good standing. Appeals must be submitted no later than noon on the day prior to the first day of classes. Students will be required to meet with their Academic Advisor prior to submitting any such appeal. Appeals are reviewed and decided upon by the Director. If the appeal is approved, the Director will notify the University Registrar and the reinstated student’s preregistered schedule will be retained. If the appeal is denied, the student will be purged from preregistered honors courses.
