  1. Call to Order – The November 14, 2016 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:00 p.m. in the Ropp Center, Room 105, by President Julie Rutledge.
  2. Roll Call – Julie Rutledge – A quorum was met.
  3. Approval of Minutes – October 2016 – Postponed until December meeting.
  4. Guest Speaker – Mr. Ron Cathey, Director of Counseling and Career Services
    1. Introduced the University Senate to QPR which is training for dealing with those who are suicidal.  Questions to ask. Persuade to live. Referred to the right people. Asked for Senators to think about if:  you, your department, or your student organizations might be interested in training.  Training can occur through the Absent Professor Program or they will be offering one afternoon a week training with approximately 30 people who can fit at a time.  Training is about 50-60 minutes and includes some role play.  Official launching will occur via e-mail.
    2. Goal is to train 2,000 at Tech by the end of the academic year.
  5. Business – New Business – Updates from around the University.
    1. Rutledge gave an update on:
      1. The search for a new Senate secretary – Currently speaking with a candidate.
      2. The “Drone” and Free Speech policies – Executive committee discussed at length and suggested several changes which were implemented and the policies were voted on and approved at APC.
      3. Reminder to donate to United Way by November 18th
      4. Review of the campus visit by Commissioner of Higher Education
      5. Constitutional Amendment which would have allowed campuses to have more control of their budgets did not pass.
      6. Vacancy on the University Grievance Committee was voted on and filled by Tanya Sims from the Division of Nursing.
    2. Sub-Committee Work Time – The majority of the meeting was devoted to this.
  6. Voluntary Remarks and Reminders
    1. December Meeting:  Monday, December 19th, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., University Hall 111
    2. Guest Speaker:  Dr. Napper will be visiting the Senate in either December or January
  7. Adjournment – Meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
