December 18, 2017 – Minutes

  1. Call to Order – The December 18, 2017 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:00 p.m. in University Hall, Room 111, by President Ernest Rufleth. 
  2. Roll Call – Alicia Kimbell – A quorum was met.
  3. Approval of Minutes
    1. October 2017 – approved on a Murray/Nielsen motion
    2. November 2017 – approved on a Crook/Murray motion
  4. New Business
    1. Updates from around the University/State
      1. ALFS Report
        1. Ernest Rufleth led a presentation at the meeting on what it’s like to be a Liberal Arts faculty member. 
        2. The Chancellor at LSUA led a discussion on how they handled accommodations for their enrollment increase this past fall. 
        3. Teri Galloway of LOUIS led a discussion on the open source movement which would push toward making open source textbooks more accessible though not mandatory. 
        4. Discussion was led about AAUP and membership information.  Included a faculty/graduate student dialogue on what will happen if the fee waiver tax goes through.  
        5. Recap of the statewide faculty forums that were held on November 2nd.
      2. Raises – According to a report from the President, raises will be in effect as of January 1, 2018 and will show on the January 30th paychecks. 
      3. Dr. Rallo, Commissioner of Higher Education, led a roundtable discussion on December 15th on campus regarding upcoming changes to higher education.  
      4. University Senate Attendance Policies – Ernest Rufleth reminded the Senate members to send a proxy on their behalf if they are unable to attend meetings. 
    2. Committee Work Time
      1. Ernest Rufleth reminded the sub-committees that a meeting can be set for the individual groups if they are interested in changing/revising a policy.  A written document including research should be prepared prior to scheduling a meeting with the President or Provost. 
      2. The sub-committees met for the remainder of the meeting to work on their current initiatives.
  5. Voluntary Remarks and Reminders
    1. January Meeting: Monday, January 22nd, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., University Hall, Room 111
    2. Davy Norris, Chief Research and Innovation Officer, will be the guest speaker for the January meeting. 
  6. Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
