  1. Call to Order – The May 17, 2021 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:00 p.m. in Wyly Auditorium/Zoom Session by President Michael Swanbom
  2. Welcome – President, Michael Swanbom, COES
  3. Roll Call – Alicia Kimbell recorded the attendees as they logged into Zoom as well as those that attended in person; a quorum was met
  4. Approval of April 2021 Minutes – a motion to approve the minutes was made by Joseph Williams and seconded by Jane Jacob; all approved
  5. Opening Remarks from Michael Swanbom, Senate President
    • Voting procedure for senate officer positions and faculty/staff awards
      • Will be sending out a link to the Google Forms document; a unique code will be given for voting access
      • Rank choices for each category for instant runoff
  • Vote by Wednesday, May 19th at 5:00 p.m.
  1. President Guice: Remarks and Q & A
    • Thanked the members for their service within the University Senate throughout this challenging school year
    • Since last meeting with the senate in January, has met with the various colleges and divisions on campus, responded to their questions, and will continue to do so as much as possible
  • State funding is still looking good for higher education; will continue to advocate for raises
  1. Discussed the budget process
    1. Budgeting is based on our operating budget
      • State revenue
      • Tuition and fee revenues (predominant part)
      • For next year, budget depends on if enrollment is up or down
    2. $20 million spent on scholarships each year
    3. Need a steady state of growth (declines beginning in 2018 have created challenges)
    4. Decide on salary dollars
      • Look at enrollment trends
      • Accreditation needs
      • Are there vacant positions needing to be filled?
      • Special opportunities that bring in growth
      • Research
      • Program reviews
    5. Driven by revenues; can change as the year progresses
  1. Final Remarks from Michael Swanbom, Senate President
    • Appreciative of the senate’s support in his role as president; will serve as President Ex Officio next year
